Just attended my last lecture of 'Introduction to Psychology'. It was on abnormal psychology. Learnt about depression and schizophrenia. I think there's a lot of stigma attached to these patients. A lot of black jokes about them and IMH.
I used to think that we can always control what we think and how we feel. So I don't think that I really understood the plight of these patients. I thought depression is just about being sad. Until I attended the lecture, I've always wondered why can't they just ' snap out of it'?
I think being in psychology taught me a lot of things. A lot of times we diagnose patients as 'depressive', 'schizophrenic' but we forget that they are not just a collective group of symtoms. They're real people with real feelings, just like us. They too have mothers, father, brothers, sisters. They have dreams and hopes.
The lecturer showed us a video clip of a schizophrenic named 'Harry'. Harry's condition made it difficult for him to tell the difference between real and unreal experiences, to think logically, to have appropriate emotional response to others and behave in social situations.
In the video clip, Harry was being interviewed by a psychologist. What he said really did not made sense. To a simple question of "How are you?", he went on to talk about protons and neurons and atoms.
A lot of people would think that Harry must have some tragic childhood for him to be like that. Actually, before Harry was diagnosed as schizophrenic, he was just another teenager reading psychology as a major at a university.
Actually there are many patients who are able to accomplish much in life in spite of their conditions. Contrary to popular belief, they are not useless, handicapped people depending on society for their survival.
One good example is Vincent Van Gogh.
The Starry Night was painted by Van Gogh in 1889 in the hospital for mentally disturbed people in St Remy de Provence. Van Gogh was considered to have been affected by bipolar disorder and this painting has high contrasts analogous to extreme bipolar highs and lows, and captures the vibrancy associated with mania
The leafless tree in the drawing is like reaching for the starry skies, like reaching for help.
Music composer Don Mclean was so touched by the painting that he wrote the song Vincent ( Starry starry Night).
Vincent had a sad life actually. He was borned on the same day as his stillborned older brother, also named Vincent. Van Gogh could have suffered psychological trauma as a result of being a 'replacement child', having a deceased brother with the same name and same birthdate.
His love life was sad too. He had fell in love with his landlord's daughter but she rejected him. He also fell in love with his cousin but was also rejected. He then lived with a pregnant prostitute for a year and a half but this relationship failed too.
Even though Vincent painted more than 400 works, he only sold one when he was alive.
Vincent Van Gogh died by shooting himself in the chest with a pistol. Even so, he did not die immediatly. Van Gogh had died 3 days later. As he was dying, he said 'La tristesse durera toujours' ('The sadness will last forever.') and his last words were "I wish I could pass away like this."
